We've had a busy week...

It's official - our PE and sports are gold!

For the fourth year running, St. Finian's has been awarded the prestigous Gold Sportsmark Award. This award rewards schools for their continued commitment and development of school sport, competition and physical education. The criterion for this award was set by Sport England and the Youth Sports Trust. It assesses PE, school sports participation, competition and sporting opportybities given to school's pupils.

The Gold award recognises those schools who show exceptional achievement, excellent participation, highly innovative schemes and outstanding progress in meeting their sporting aims. We are very proud and as a school we could not have achieved this without the children, parents, coaches and volunteers who attended and competed in all types of festivals, tournaments and competitions.

Polite reminder that all Mrs Stevens' morning and lunchtime clubs are free. Any child wishing to attend may sign up on the day and on a week by week basis - except cheerleading as we will be working on a set routine. Pupils wishing to attend do not need a packed lunch but it is advisable. They must be dressed in their appropriate PE kits, no jewellery and essential equipment for that sport.

Football Friendlies against St. Gabriel's School, Newbury

St Gabriel's Mixed

In preparation for the year 3/4 football season, two teams of Year 3/4 football squads played friendlies against St. Gabriel’s on two separate days.  “It was great fun and everyone got to move positions during the match” reported Szymon.  Both teams won their matches and displayed some “cracking” football and were rewarded with delicious refreshments from St. Gabriel’s.

Thatcham 28th Tag Rugby Festival

2019 Y34

After months of sunshine the heavens opened on this year’s Thatcham tag Rugby Festival, but it did not dampen the St. Finian’s spirit. Our teams played triumphantly and showed what great sportsmen they were. On the day there were over 200 children playing tag rugby over twelve schools. They all played brilliantly and displayed great sportsmanship throughout. As a festival no scores were recorded however, the year 3/4 team won every game and the year 5/6 drew one game and won the rest.

A huge thank you to James Ambrose and Scott Cooper for their brilliant coaching, dedication and time. They both took time out of their busy schedules to coach our teams beforehand and be there on the day. Thank you to Harry, Jake, Donnacha, Charlie, Finlay, Cameron, Imogen and Sienna who are all ex St. Finian’s who came out in the pouring rain to cheer our teams on. It is much appreciated and lovely to see you as ever.

Our cheerleading sessions are underway; cheerleading is on Monday at 8.00am in the school hall.  If your child is in years 4, 5 or 6 and is interested in attending please contact Mrs. Stevens via the school office.

A plea from Mrs. Stevens…

The children are looking great in their new trainers – if your child has shoe laces for PE and any of our free sports club, please could you help them practise tying up their laces at home. It will be greatly appreciated - thank you!

Thatcham Tornadoes Primary Football Festival

Team Shot(3)

Well done to our infant football teams who braved the weather to attend the Thatcham Tornadoes Primary Schools Infant Festival. As part of the Thatcham Festival of Art and Leisure, Thatcham Tornadoes hosted the infant festival on Lower Way playing fields. This year, we had three teams the Foxes, Falcons and Finches representing St. Finian’s and they all had a fabulous time. They braved the inclement weather that started with heavy rain and ended in beautiful sunshine to play six games of football – however they never stopped in between the games playing football with anyone who joined them. A big thank you to everyone who came out to support them including Cayden and Ollie ex St. Finian’s, who were quickly drafted in by Mrs. Stevens to help coach and entertain – they did a fabulous job – thank you.
